Luke Thompson has over 18 years of experience working with children, young people, and their families. As a qualified Occupational Therapist since 2015, Luke has developed a specialisation in neuro-disabilities and Assistive Technology (AT) over the last nine years. Luke is also recognised for his expertise in assistive solutions, managing complex cases, and pioneering projects aimed at improving accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
In 2024, Luke launched Jiao Ltd, a company dedicated to providing expert witness services, bespoke clinical assessments, and consultancy on assistive technology. Jiao Ltd aims to empower individuals with disabilities through innovative AT solutions like switch toys, power wheelchair simulators, and more. As the company director, Luke is at the forefront of guiding both professionals and individuals in navigating the world of AT.
Luke continues to hold a small caseload of clients to stay connected to practical, hands-on work and consults with other therapists and organisations on AT strategy, service provision, and product development. Some of his notable collaborations include his work with Imperial College London, where he has co-developed a range of AT innovations such as the accessible zip, AI signing technology, and AR interventions. He is also the co-creator of the Pace MyWay App.
Luke’s expertise has made him a trusted voice on clinical advisory boards for Gripable (upper limb intervention) and Motion UK (motorised exoskeletons for children with cerebral palsy). He consults widely on research and product trials for some of the most cutting-edge technologies in the AT field, such as Enayball, The Parallel, and Permobil’s Mini Explorer. His commitment to practical, innovative solutions has also led him to work as an assessor for the MERU Bugzi, as well as in postural and complex power wheelchair assessments.
Throughout his career, Luke has been a compassionate advocate for those with disabilities. His work is driven by a desire to help individuals achieve their full potential, empowering them to live independently and with dignity. His leadership has been recognised within the profession, serving as the business lead for the Royal College of Occupational Therapists’ (RCOT) specialist group Children, Young People and Families (CYPF) and helping to organise their first virtual conference.
In addition to his clinical work, Luke has provided vital volunteer services to International China Concern, supporting disabled and abandoned children in China through equipment donations and on-site expertise. He spent over a year in China and continues to return regularly to offer his support.
Luke Thompson is a thought leader in assistive technology and a dedicated OT professional with a clear mission to enhance the lives of those with disabilities through innovative technology and expert guidance.
