Our Story
You might be wondering why I chose the name Jiao for an assistive technology company. I believe you can name a company something obvious, something meaningful, or after yourself. For me, Jiao is deeply personal and precious. It’s the name of a young girl I had the honour of carrying into an orphanage while volunteering in 2015. She’s the reason I’ve dedicated my career to working in the field of neurodisabilities and assistive technology. My wife and I had hoped to adopt her, but sadly, that’s no longer possible. Her name means more to me than my own, and I want others to know her story. She continues to inspire the work I do and the way I approach it.
You may also have noticed some meaningful details in the Jiao logo. The letter “J” is shaped like a raindrop, which carries a deep significance for my family. There’s a long and special story about raindrops in our lives, but the short version is this: another very special young girl, an orphan, sadly passed away, and her name meant “raindrop.” In her memory, I promised to one day adopt a child in her name. When my wife was pregnant with our daughter, before we even knew she was a girl, we discussed names as all parents do. I’ll never forget the moment my wife turned to me and suggested that if we had a daughter, she should be named after that precious child. It felt so right that we didn’t even consider boys’ names. We found a western version of the name to continue the raindrop theme, and when our daughter was born, we gave her both names. The raindrop in the “J” symbolises my daughter and her namesake, as well as other significant moments in our lives tied to rain.
The three dots over the “i” in the logo represent a settings icon, symbolising my role in assistive technology. My goal is to help you adjust the settings of your life. I’m not here to simply give you technology, but to thoughtfully integrate it in a way that empowers you to live independently. Each dot also reflects a key word from our purpose statement: heart (red), tech (blue), life (green). Getting to the heart of your tech life.
