Switch Heroes

The Switch Heroes books are a captivating series designed to support and inspire children on their switch development journey. Created as part of the Seven Stages of Switch Development (7SSD), these books feature engaging characters and relatable stories that illustrate the benefits of switch technology and the milestones of switch progression. Each story is crafted to make the learning process enjoyable and accessible, helping children understand what switches can do and what to expect as they grow their skills. Ideal for both children and their caregivers, the Switch Heroes books aim to make switch learning a fun and empowering experience.

AT Assessments

I work directly with individuals in two key ways. As an expert witness through Steve Martin Associates, I provide specialist assessments for legal cases. I also take on a limited number of private clients, offering holistic clinical assessments and interventions related to assistive technology. My expertise covers a broad range of needs, including environmental controls, alternative access methods (such as switches and eye gaze), specialist wheelchairs, seating, mobility aids, and accessible gaming.

Training: online & in person

I deliver training focused on assistive technology, including an online and in-person module on the Seven Stages of Switch Development (7SSD). This training helps professionals and carers understand how to support switch users at different developmental stages. Additionally, I offer resources like the Switch Heroes books, designed to make learning about switch technology engaging and accessible.

Consultancy

I offer expert consultancy services for special schools and organisations, focusing on assessing and implementing their assistive technology (AT) needs. This involves providing thorough evaluations, tailored recommendations, and ongoing support to seamlessly integrate AT into their environments. My consultancy extends to collaborating on innovative product development, including work on Innovate UK-funded projects. In addition, I am deeply involved in developing new AT tools, such as creating educational toys based on the Seven Stages of Switch Development (7SSD) to support learning through play. I also hold the intellectual property for a power wheelchair simulator, which I am advancing in partnership with Imperial College London (ICL).

Luke Thompson

I’m passionate about what Tech can do for the people I work with. I believe that technology can be transformative at every stage of life. For some, it becomes their voice, hands, feet, and their way of exploring the world—enabling them to live independent and fulfilling lives. My mission is to help as many people on that journey as possible.
